Guidelines and Tips:

The Summit Committee is working to maximize resources by distributing funding support throughout the state and reaching out to as many youth teams as possible. Teams may apply for the number of scholarships needed to support the entire team; therefore:

  • not all teams are guaranteed a scholarship and teams may be awarded partial scholarships.
  • teams not receiving scholarships will be placed on a waiting list. If additional scholarships become available, the Team Adult Advisor will be contacted.
  • teams with less than three students are welcome to attend but are not eligible for a scholarship.
  • priority will be given to applications that are completed, including a signed w9 form, and received by the Friday, September 17th deadline.
  • given that there is a waiting list every year, prepare your team by getting permission and completing any supplemental funding for travel or event costs in advance. Do not wait until your team is notified by the Summit Committee to prepare permission forms and organize (this year there is a very tight timeline). As noted, teams may be awarded partial scholarships.
  • teams not registered by the deadline will lose their scholarship.

The primary goals of the Prevention Summit Youth Leadership Track are:

  • To provide youth with an exceptional learning experience, the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and learn about substance abuse prevention.
  • To enhance the working relationship between youth leaders and Team Adult Advisors by focusing on a tangible plan development process and activities.
  • To better equip youth and adults to develop a strategic project plan that clearly defines the activities that young people will carry out to address the problems and goals that their community is striving to achieve.
  • To provide a venue for youth teams from across the state to network with other youth teams that are leading and making change in their communities.

Teams receiving scholarships are expected to:

  • Participate in the Prevention Summit Youth Leadership workshops that focus on the prevention of alcohol, prescription, synthetic substance use and/or other destructive behaviors.
  • Propose a prevention project to be undertaken after the Prevention Summit that has a focus on the prevention of alcohol, prescription synthetic substance use, and/or other destructive disorders in the team’s school community.

To be eligible for a Youth Team Scholarship, teams must:

  • Have an identified Team Adult Advisor who will lead and participate in the Youth Leadership workshops with the youth team. The Team Adult Advisor should also fulfill one of the chaperone roles.  (See Team Adult Advisor/Chaperone for more details about Team Adult Advisor and Chaperone duties.)
  • Consist of at least three (3) youth and one (1) chaperone, 4-6 youth with (2) chaperones or 7-9 youth with (3) chaperones, and so on. The 3:1 ratio of youth to chaperone is required.
  • Submit a complete team scholarship application, including signed w9 tax form, no later than Friday, September 17 by 5pm Pacific. Scholarships will be limited to approximately 275 people.

Teams awarded scholarships may receive one or more of the following:

  • Free registration for Team Adult Advisor, chaperone(s) and youth.
  • A travel assistance between $25-$150 to assist with travel costs. Amount is dependent upon team’s county of origin. It is expected that teams may need to contribute to the difference in actual travel costs. Teams may not receive travel assistance check before the event. Please prepare for the possiblity to pay for all travel costs up front and receive a travel assistance check for the amount awarded to the team after the event.
  • Lodging
    • Should teams wish to purchase additional rooms for members, a block price is available. However, there is no guarantee that rooms will be adjoining rooms, as the Summit Committee already will have booked lodging for teams awarded scholarships.
    • It is the expectation that people will share rooms when appropriate and feasible, or that teams may need to purchase additional rooms for team members.
    • For example up to four rooms can be requested for a team of ten (10) to twelve (12); three rooms for a team of seven (7) to nine (9); 2 rooms for a team of six (6) or less.
    • It will be up to each team to determine how many and who should be in each room [i.e. one chaperone and three youth per room or four youth in one room and two chaperones in the second room, etc.].
    • The number of hotel rooms and travel assistance amount awarded to your team will be provided in the Scholarship Award Letter which will be sent via email to the Team Adult Advisor.
    • Hotel confirmation number(s) and additional hotel information will be provided closer to the event.
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner on Friday, October 15 and breakfast and lunch on Saturday, October 16. All other meals are the responsibility of the team.

Once accepted, teams:

  • Will receive an award letter via email no later than September 22, 2010. The letter will include a unique scholarship coupon code (per team) with which to register. The letter will also include the number of hotel rooms and travel incentive amount awarded to the team, if applicable.
  • Must register online by October 1, 2010 using the unique coupon code provided in the acceptance letter. Please note: Teams not registered by Oct 1 by 5pm Pacific may lose their scholarship to other teams on the waiting list.
  • Must download and ensure all youth receive the Youth Guidelines/Permission Forms packet. Youth must receive all necessary parental (or legal guardian) signatures to attend the Prevention Summit. Youth will not be allowed to attend without bringing, to the Summit, all necessary signed forms.

Application should be completed by the Team Adult Advisor.

Email a completed application to scholarship@preventionsummit.org

no later than Friday, September 17 by 5pm Pacific.

Applications received after this date, as well as applications that are not complete, may not be accepted.

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery and the Washington Attorney General’s Office created a partnership to provide scholarships for youth teams to attend the 2010 WA State Prevention Summit. Funding will be available to help support the 2010 Prevention Summit to continue prevention of alcohol, tobacco and drug use and place an emphasis on the importance of the prevention of prescription, and synthetic substance use. These grant funds are entirely generated from court settlements with drug companies for consumer protection violations impacting citizens of Washington State.
